Flat washers go under the head and under the nut. The lock washer, if you use one, goes under the nut only, and it works by digging into the nut face as it compresses — which means it marks the surface, so do not use one on anything you want to keep unmarked.

- Bright clear zinc. Stamped edges are slightly burred on one face, which is normal for stamped washers — seat the burred face away from the bearing surface.

Care
- Keep dry; zinc plate is sacrificial.
- Discard a split lock washer once it has been compressed and removed — it has lost most of its spring.
Cautions
- Not rated for overhead lifting, rigging, towing, or any application where a failure drops a load on someone. Those need certified, individually traceable hardware and this is not that.
- Not structural. Do not use in load-bearing building work, vehicle suspension, brakes, or steering.
- No published proof load or torque spec is supplied with these, because they are a general-purpose assortment rather than a graded batch. If your application needs a number, buy graded fasteners with a certificate.
- Not for outdoor or marine use.
- A split lock washer is not a substitute for correct torque or for a thread-locking compound in a joint that genuinely vibrates.
