A hundred solid brass slotted wood screws in five lengths. Slotted rather than cross-head because these are for work where the screw is visible — hardware on furniture, hinges on a box, a nameplate — and a slot lined up with the grain is the traditional detail.

Solid brass throughout, not brass-plated steel. It will not rust, and it takes the same patina as the fittings, which is why the two look right together.

Brass is soft. A brass screw driven into hardwood without a pilot hole will shear its head off, and you will then be drilling it out. Pilot every hole and run a steel screw of the same size in first to cut the thread if the timber is dense.

The specification

Everything we know about this part, stated plainly — including what it is not rated for. The same record is printed on the card in the box.

Material & finish
Solid CZ121 brass, unlacquered. Slotted countersunk head.
Dimensions
#6 × 1/2" (25 pcs) · #6 × 3/4" (25) · #8 × 1" (20) · #8 × 1-1/4" (20) · #10 × 1-1/2" (10). 100 screws total.
Weight
420 g
Finish & tolerance
Bright unlacquered brass on arrival, darkening to a warm brown over several weeks of exposure. This is not tarnish or a defect; it is what unlacquered brass does, and it cannot be prevented without lacquering.
Made
Machined and finished in the United States.

Care

  • Pilot-drill every hole. In hardwood, cut the thread with a steel screw of the same gauge first, then replace it with the brass one.
  • A little wax or soap on the thread reduces the torque needed considerably.
  • Use a screwdriver that fills the slot fully — a narrow blade will chew a brass slot immediately.

Cautions

  • Not structural, and much weaker than steel of the same size. Brass shears rather than bending.
  • Not for outdoor structural timber or decking.
  • Do not drive with an impact driver. Brass will not survive it.
  • Not for direct contact with untreated oak or western red cedar in damp conditions — the tannins corrode brass and stain the timber black.
