A four-inch cast iron bench vice with replaceable serrated steel jaw plates and a swivel base that locks with two bolts. Twelve kilos of grey iron, which is the entire reason it works: mass is what stops a vice moving when you are working against it.
The screw is a square-thread acme, not a V-thread, so it drives smoothly under load and does not try to unwind itself. The handle is loose in its bar deliberately, so it drops out of the way rather than standing up where you catch a hand on it.
Cast iron is enormously rigid and completely unforgiving. It does not bend under overload the way steel does — it cracks, without warning, and it cracks all the way. Everything in the cautions below follows from that.

- Finish & tolerance
- Textured black enamel over cast iron, with machined bright faces on the jaws and slide. Casting texture, small surface pinholes and minor enamel variation are inherent to sand casting and are not defects.
- Made
- Sand-cast and machined in Taiwan, inspected in the United States.
Care
- Keep the slide and screw clean and greased. Grit in the slide wears the machined faces and cannot be undone.
- Wipe the bright faces with an oiled rag; bare machined iron flash-rusts in a damp shop within days.
- Fit soft jaw covers for anything you do not want marked — the serrated plates are meant to bite.
- Bolt it down through all three holes. A vice held by two bolts flexes the casting every time you load it.
Cautions
- NOT an anvil. Do not hammer on the jaws, the slide or the body. Cast iron cracks rather than bending, and a cracked vice can fail while under load.
- Do not extend the handle with a pipe to gain leverage. The casting is the limiting part, not your grip.
- Not for bending long stock against the jaws — that puts a twisting load into the swivel base it was never designed for.
- Not rated for lifting or restraining anything overhead.
- Not for hot work. Do not clamp anything glowing; the heat destroys the temper of the jaw plates.
