An eight-inch adjustable spanner with a knurled worm screw and a jaw that opens to thirty millimetres. Drop-forged, with a tight jaw fit — the play between the sliding jaw and the body is what separates a spanner you can rely on from one that rounds everything it touches.
Adjustable spanners have a bad reputation, almost all of it earned by loose ones used the wrong way round. Set the jaw firmly onto the flats with no slack, and pull so the load goes onto the fixed jaw rather than the sliding one. Used like that it is a genuinely precise tool.

Care
- Keep the worm screw clean and lightly oiled — grit in the worm is what makes a spanner slack.
- Set the jaw with no play before applying force, and re-check it as you work; it can walk open under load.
- Pull towards the fixed jaw side of the head.
Cautions
- Not an impact tool. Do not strike it or extend it with a pipe.
- Not insulated. Not for live electrical work.
- Not for rounded or seized fasteners — reach for a proper socket or a nut splitter instead. An adjustable on a rounded nut finishes the job of destroying it.
- Not a pipe wrench. It has flat jaws and will slip on anything round.
